Mayor Doug Greer (L) Cara Burton (C) Jim McDaniel (R)
At the April 1, 2024, meeting of the Exmore Town Council, Mayor Douglas Greer presented a plaque bearing a formal Resolution of Appreciation to Cara. J. Burton for her outstanding work and vision in creating the Exmore Walking Tour. The history-based tour was developed by Cara in conjunction with VA250 activities.
The well-researched, informative tour developed by Cara provides a "Step Back in Time" for a look at Exmore in its formative days as a robust, vital railroad town and center for commerce here on the Eastern Shore.
Mayor Greer and members of the Exmore Town Council voted unanimously to present Cara with this official Resolution of Appreciation, thanking her publicly for her excellent work and commitment in bringing the Exmore Walking Tour to life.
Working with her partner, Jim McDaniel, Cara uncovered historical details and personal stories showing, among other interesting facts, that Exmore was once part of Downingville Plantation. Cara and Jim's months of meticulous research also revealed the diverse makeup of Exmore's downtown. In addition to hotels, a bean counting house and a market called Tip Top, there were businesses owned by Russian Immigrants, a salon, a tourist home and a lodge for Red Men. There was even a library located at 3229 Main.
The Walking Tour was introduced at a Launch Party hosted by Cara and Jim in the lobby of the Exmore Town Hall on December 7. 2023. The event was attended by more than 60 residents of Exmore and neighboring communities who were invited to share their memories of growing up in or around Exmore. David Scanlon, who contributed historical photos (and more) to the project and Jerry Doughty, who provided Cara and JIm with his recollections of early Exmore, were present.
