For more than two decades, Ethel Barrett Parks has been a friendly face, a sometimes-invisible force and a steady anchor at the Exmore Town Hall. Now, after working with and for five Town Managers, three Mayors, a long list of councilmen and hundreds of Exmore residents, Ethel is putting her professional career aside. She is officially retiring.
An Eastern Shore native, Ethel was born and raised in Townsend. She moved to Exmore after marrying and still lives on the same street, just two houses down, from where her husband grew up. In fact, five generations of Parks have resided here. Now, this home, and the new generations of Parks, including an 18-month-old great grandchild, will have more of Ethel's time and talents.
Ethel first joined the Town of Exmore in August 2001, accepting a position as Utility Clerk. At that time, there was no Town Manager, The Town Clerk was in charge of everything. In September 2005, Ethel was asked to take over the very important administrative role of Town Clerk, and since then, she has helped shape the growth and tone of the Exmore community.
Stating it simply, as Town Clerk, Ethel was responsible for all issues related to accounts payable, human resources, benefits, FOIA requests, council meeting minutes, records and more; all the while providing support for the town's leadership and mentoring new employees. A lot of hats to wear, and plenty of challenges, including a financial crisis, one inept Town Manager, and the recent water and sewer projects. Ethel attributes her success in navigating the challenges to maintaining a positive attitude, receiving support from others and taking one day at a time.
From her office, Ethel has watched Exmore develop and mature. She notes that the most dramatic, meaningful changes for Exmore have occurred under the current administration with Doulas Greer as Mayor and Robert Duer as Town Manager. In the quiet, efficient execution of her duties, Ethel contributed to those changes and will leave an enduring imprint. Thank you, Ethel. Here's to a wonderful next adventure. We will miss you.
